Project 1, research

Project 1 Assignment primary research

During my half term, I took the time to find primary research simply by looking for specific films in cinemas that may be fitting for further inspiration. The film that stood out particularly was this year’s Halloween: Independence Day. Not because of the story precisely of a masked mass-murderer going round the streets killing people, rather the structure and layout that it’s given. The pace was quite solid and I never felt bored, which would be something I want to master. This would have to be an interesting attempt for that to feel the same way when watching a compressed version for a 10 second teaser. The idea would have to be finding simple introduction to the characters and narrative within that 10 seconds, and an extent of excitement for what I am presenting.

Project 1’s Videography Research

I’ve now got the task to create a 10 second teaser trailer for an original piece. From looking at this defined task, I sees to find research around other pieces that started with near enough the same budget and same quality I can start off with. Similar qualities of film easy to start off with is the mainstream cult-classic film “Rocky”.

It’s on the lines of similarities for what I’m going for in this “feature film” I’m making. Starters the budget for my project is awfully tight and will have to take a lot of compromising. However that isn’t always an issue, what does need to be required is a good story structure that’s interesting and easy to get engaged to. With that, particular concepts from Rocky seems like a good thing to take notes from. Along with making side to side comparisons between each-other when both compressed into only 10 seconds.

For action pieces that would be included in the teaser, I found the appropriate music to use in just that amount of time with “Going The Distance” by Bill Conti. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=af1tbI5xiqM. My intensions are to use a small piece of this music to match what’s shown in the teaser and what tension it brings more on to it. The specific part of the song I was thinking of using is from 1:20-1:30 or 2:25-2:35. These are the suiting 10 seconds to have in, sinking appropriately with the action involved.

Another thing I’m also temped to use from Rocky is possibly the font used for my title. The font used for Rocky’s title was a font called Franklin Gothic designed by Morris Fuller Benton.

The thing I’d want to change from Rocky would be the the concept of the teaser/film, considering they would be different films. However the music seems fitting in the teaser made and easy to use for this teaser, being a project as well. The sense of realism such as the lighting will be roughly on the same levels.

What’s most specially inspiring from Rocky is the independence involved, not only from the production point of view, but also how the development took some of the people doing multiple jobs, such as Sylvester Stallone, who not only played the role of Rocky, but was responsible for writing the whole story too. This would be the same approach I had to make the project, having me involve with and do as much as I can in developing it.

Rocky was Produced by Irwin Winkler who also worked on Goodfellas, directed by John G. Avildsen and the cinematography was by James Crabe, who both also made similar films, most famously The Karate Kid, another film I’d may like to get inspiration from.

Project 1’s production research

I’ve been researching towards trailer designers to take inspiration for my trailer project that’s been given to me. With current interest, the researching process will be lead from my chosen trailer that comes across interesting. At the time, I was keen to take ideas from the recent trailer for Creed II, however I’ve found myself more drawn to taking inspiration from the first Creed film, as I can look more into it with access of watching the film.

Creed:

Creed; the continuation from The Rocky franchise was directed and written by Ryan Coogler, who also screenplayed the film with Aaron Covington. In production, the cinematographer was Maryse Alberti, the production design was by Hannah Beachler and the film editing was done by Claudia Castello and Michael P. Shawver. These production crew members have also worked alongside with the director Ryan Coogler on films like “Fruitvale Station” in 2013 and “Black Panther”. The graphic designer was Mike Pantuso. Mike Pantuso has had different work from Creed too, he’s had involvement with Sesame Street and a 2010 TV show called Gravity. The additional photography was taken by Russell Michniak, known for other pieces like Baby Driver, The Nice Guys and The Night Before.

Baby Driver:

Baby Driver is a romantic heist drama film that was written and directed by Edgar Wright and was produced by Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner and Nira Park. The Film editing was done by Jonathan Amos and Paul Machliss.
